The Pilgrim Path

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me—Ps. 138:7

My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart—Ps. 73:26

The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raise the up those that be bowed down—Ps. 145:14

“An ointment for every would, a cordial for every faintness, a remedy for every disease. Blessed is he who is well skilled in heavenly pharmacy and knows how to lay hold on the healing virtues of the promises of God!”—C.H. Spurgeon, “Obtaining Promises”

Promises can rouse our cynicism. We once hoped in them, but now they resemble the throwaway pennies, scrap papers, or leftover bolts shoved away in the junk drawer. The Psalmist gives us language in Psalm 77:8: “Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time?”

And yet, our need to reorient our lives around the risk of promises remains necessary, even if our relationship with promises sometimes reveals only our painful questions about them. Why? Because promises of a certain kind are like voices of realistic hope that intrude into our dungeon thoughts. They are “precious and very great,” given as gifts to us from God (2 Peter 1:4). Our souls need them.

Pray that the promises of our Heavenly Father would permeate the fibers of our being. Pray for those whose depression and despair can lead to hopelessness. Pray that hopelessness is shattered in the light of the promises of very God!

Grace and Peace in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Pastor Peter
