The Pilgrim Path---Proverbs 13: 20

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

WISE COUNSEL…

For many years I sent the deacons and elders quotes from some “seasoned” souls. I would call it, “humble opinions.” Seemed an appropriate time to have several fine friends speak to us all on this wonderful Saturday. Here goes:

“Self-centered indulgence, pride and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems of the American lifestyle.” Billy Graham

“We always pay dearly for chasing after what is cheap.” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

“We humans, you see, have an infinite capacity for self-rationalization.” Chuck Colson

“Let the temporal things serve your use, but the eternal be the object of your desire.” Thomas A Kempis

“One asked a philosopher what God was doing; he answered that his whole work was to lift up the humble, and to cast down the proud.” Thomas Brooks

“A man can counterfeit love, he can counterfeit faith, he can counterfeit hope and all the other graces, but it is very difficult to counterfeit humility.” D. L. Moody

“In suffering, I learned to need mercy. From suffering, I learned to give mercy. The living faith that embraces Christ is formed in the crucible of weakness. The courage to carry on and the strong love that cares well for others are formed in the crucible of struggle.” David Powlison

“Be not proud of race, face, place, or grace. Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“The main things are the plain things, and the plain things are the main things.” Alistair Begg

“If Christ be not Heaven to you now, He shall not be hereafter.” John Owen

“Nearly all men can stand adversity but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” Abraham Lincoln

“His will is our hiding place, LORD Jesus, keep me in your will.” Corrie ten Boom

“Humility and patience are the surest proofs of increase of Love.” John Wesley

“Humility is beyond our reach. If it were a product of reaching, we would instinctively be proud of reaching it. It is a GIFT.” John Piper

“The most effective poison to lead men to ruin is to boast in themselves, in their own wisdom and power.” John Calvin

“Joy is not gush. Joy is not mere jolliness. Joy is perfect acquiescence---acceptance, rest---in God’s will, whatever comes.” Amy Carmichael

“Ye know not what the LORD is working out of this, but ye shall know it hereafter.” Samuel Rutherford

“A Christian must look at the trouble with one eye, and to God with the other. See God to be your salvation.” Richard Sibbes

“The things of the world cannot advance the soul in the least.” George Swinnock

“Our prayers and God’s mercy are like two buckets in a well. One ascends, and one descends. Our prayers ascend to God in heaven, and his mercies and blessings descend upon us.” Ezekiel Hopkins

“God is an infinite ocean of blessedness, and there is enough in him to fill us.” Thomas Watson

HYMN

Savior, like a shepherd lead us, much we need thy tender care;

In thy pleasant pastures feed us, for our use thy folds prepare;

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou hast bought us, thine we are;

Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus, thou hast bought us, thine we are.

Hymns for the Young, 1836, attributed to Dorothy Ann Thrupp

Grace and Peace in Jesus Christ Our Risen LORD, Pastor Jason
