The Pilgrim Path (6-22-2020)

The Pilgrim Path---II Peter 1: 16—21

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

THE HOLY BIBLE

Yesterday’s Sunday School (A Time for Confidence), focus was on the Word of God. It was time well spent. You must have solid ground beneath your feet. As Christians, we do not attempt to “keep up” with the Kardashians, the Trumps, or the Housewives of-----whatever current City is making waves. We are animated by the Holy Spirit however---to walk in accordance with the teaching of the Word. This requires prayer and heart-felt discipline each and everyday of our lives. Remember: it pays to be engaged with God’s Precious Word. Pray, love it, think long and hard about a brief passage…

The devil will tell us that the Word is not that important and that it is out of touch. Please remember that the devil is a liar. He is also about the business of destroying the souls of people. One of his oldest games is this one, “Has God really said that? I bet he really meant something else!” Perhaps the devil may simply say to you, “That’s not even true anymore…Nobody believes that!” Beware the destroyer…Beware the Father of Lies!

In Sunday School, we recalled the memory devise, “SCAN” ---just some core teaching that Protestants have believed concerning Scripture for an exceptionally long time:

“S”---Scripture is Sufficient: Almighty God is giving us what we need to know about the way to be redeemed ---and we may know about what is actually pleasing to Him---by being familiar with Holy Scripture…

“C”---The Bible is really “clear” in its general teaching about life and salvation----so much so, that in some place or the other, regular folk may know the way of life and understand such instruction (WCF 1:7)

“A”---The Bible is the Power Book: because it comes from God (WCF 1:4). Paul says Holy Scripture is, “God-breathed” in II Timothy 3: 16. The Bible is unlike any other Book in this regard.

“N” ---Necessity. General Revelation (the created order) testifies to the existence of a Creator but cannot explain the Way of Salvation to Us. For Redemption, we must have the Special Revelation that Holy Scripture provides.

“Have you not found the Bible to be so bountiful a guest, to pay you so liberally for its board, that you always give it a hearty welcome and would not part with it for the whole world? O Let this Book of books be often before you, and your meditation all the day!” George Swinnock
