The Pilgrim Path---Psalm 23: 1

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

KEPT

David kept sheep. In Psalm 23, the LORD is keeping David as one of His sheep. Is he well kept? Are you well kept?

A Shepherd will carry sheep when they have been injured or wayward. He will make sure they get back to the fold. Jesus does this for His own.

A Shepherd will lead sheep to water and green pasture. If he does not do this, they may well lack necessary food and water. Jesus provides for His own (In Him we live and move and have our being---we forget this).

A Shepherd will defend his sheep from predators (we think of wolves). Jesus defends us from His and our enemies: death, hell, the grave---and the curse of sin.

A Shepherd will tend to sheep when they are ill. Jesus makes our bed in our sick times (we are often unaware of how attentive He is until much later).

A Shepherd typically has some affection for his sheep. Jesus knows us all by name (every hair upon our head---every tear shed---every word formed upon the back of our mouth). He loves us like no other (with an everlasting love).

A Shepherd might well give his life for his flock. Jesus lays down His life for His sheep---He is The Good Shepherd: “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross” Colossians 1: 19, 20.

Yet, we feel sometimes that we are lacking. Talk to the LORD about what it is that you lack (want). Perhaps the supply is more apparent than you had imagined. Maybe there is something better He has for you. Remember: He has you---you have Him.

“…if God did open your eyes as he did Hagar’s, you might see fountains and streams, mercies and blessings sufficient; though not many, yet enough, though not so rich, yet proper, and every way convenient for your good and comfort…” Obadiah Sedgwick

“Who dare deny that the promise of the living God is an absolute security?” John Stevenson

“I think the sense of our wants, when withal we have a restlessness and a sort of spiritual impatience under them, and can make a din, because we want him whom our soul loveth, is that which maketh an open door for Christ: and when we think we are going backward, because we feel deadness, we are going forward; for the more sense the more life, and no sense argueth no life.” Samuel Rutherford

“The wicked always want, but the righteous never; a sinner’s heart is far from satisfaction, but a gracious spirit dwells in the palace of content.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon
