The Pilgrim Path---Psalm 41: 13

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!

ETERNITY

We are only in this world for a brief time. Last I checked on life expectancy for the typical American male, I believe the actuaries said I had already marked about 82% of my life. Well, I better quit wasting time. We are all “using” that time up rapidly. We are in a “free fall” toward eternity. Some are ready---some are not. Only the Man from Nazareth (the Living Christ) may prepare any of us for the incredible transition that awaits. No one knows when they will walk through the door through which there is no return to this earthly domain. The destination is everlasting---for God is everlasting. People doubt this is so, but Jesus has prepared a place for His own (John 14: 1, 2), and the other end---is bleak and terrible for unbelievers.

Thomas Watson used to say this about eternity: Imagine we could train a bird to carry a grain of dirt from the Earth to the Moon; one grain at a time---then fly back to Earth, get another grain of dirt, back to the Moon, until the bird had transferred the “entire” Earth to the surface of the Moon. Well, said Watson, “in the time it took that bird to finish that job---eternity would have just begun!” Hmmm---and that is not even close to a description…

Eternity is serious business. We should consider it as such. Eternal rewards. Eternal punishments. The Eternal God with Whom we must deal…

“By frequent meditation of God’s eternity, we should become more sensible of the trifling nature of the world. Are we not worthy of contempt to dote upon a perishing glory, to expect support from an arm of flesh when there is an eternal beauty to ravish us, and eternal arm to protect us? God is our portion forever. The proffers of the world are ridiculous when compared with the eternity of God.” Stephen Charnock

“He that doeth the will of God abideth forever.” First John 2: 17

“Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting” Psalm 93: 2---When you enter heaven you shall find Him there bearing the dew of His youth; and through eternity the Lord Jesus shall still remain the perennial spring of joy, and life, and glory to His people. Living waters may you draw from His sacred well! Jesus always was, He always is, He always shall be. He is eternal in all His attributes, in all His offices, in all His might, and willingness to bless, comfort, guard, and crown His chosen people. Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“When we shall come home and enter to the possession of our Brother’s fair kingdom, and when our heads shall find the weight of the eternal crown of glory, and when we shall look back to pains and sufferings; then shall we see life and sorrow to be less than one step or stride from a prison to glory; and that our little inch of time---suffering is not worthy of our first night’s welcome home to heaven.” Samuel Rutherford

O then what raptured greetings on Canaan’s happy shore;

What knitting severed friendships up where partings are no more!

Then eyes with joy shall sparkle, that brimmed with tears of late;

Orphans no longer fatherless, nor widows desolate.

Henry Alford, 1867
