The Pilgrim Path---Ephesians 6: 18 (7—8—20)

“praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…”

FIND OTHERS

The first semester of my college Greek had 27 people in the class. We started the next semester with seven (7) students. I knew matters were terrible, so I asked this godly widow, Ms. Manders to pray for me. Hey, I was quite specific. She was in the Eastern Time Zone. I knew that four (4) days a week---at 1 PM, Central Time, I would be under pressure from Dr. Donald Mackey. I said, “Ms. Manders---please pray for me at 2 PM on these four days / as often as you can---that I’ll begin to learn what is required.” She said she would be glad to! Believe me---that is the only way I survived.

A little widow, Ms. Eva, prayed for me every day in my second church. Lord knows, I needed it desperately. She was one of those tried and true saints of God with a worn-out Bible that would simply “plead the promises.” There is no way I would have lasted…

This Coach (Mr. Dick), helped me realize that I really could trust the Lord and uproot my family and go to another state and take on seminary even though I didn’t have a job or any real long term living situation. We prayed together and it made all the difference...

---having a precious soul to pray with (and knowing they pray for us) reveals our vulnerability (we are not perfect—far, far from it)

---we need to confess sins we struggle with (for there is a spiritual healing we need---not just physical healing / James 5: 16)

---a godly soul will appreciate the opportunity to be entrusted with our heart-felt concerns

---it is good to be knit to others in the fellowship of soul-maturing prayer

---sometimes you just must stop together and “invite” the LORD into situations that seem so perplexing and distressing

---the bonds forged in answered prayer are some of the sweetest and strongest

---a by-product of these times together: more often hard on ourselves / tender toward others

“Prayer is the midwife to bring mercies to the believer that were conceived in the womb of promise. God commands his people if they are in any perplexity to call upon him in the day of trouble and he will hear.” George Swinnock

“Two things make us very enlarged in prayer---deep feeling of need and enlarged and strong hope of supply.” John Duncan

“Dry wells send us to the fountain.” Samuel Rutherford
