The Pilgrim Path---Psalm 85: 4

“Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us!”

“AGAIN”

We plummet and waver. We veer from the path of the Savior. We must seek his presence---and in so doing, leave our sin--- out of love for him. Renewal and restoration have to begin with us…

From Iain H. Murray: The characteristic of a revival is that a profound consciousness of sin is produced in many persons at the same time by an awareness of God.

From Arthur Skevington Wood: Revival is not an earthly concoction; it is a heavenly creation.

From David McKee: Revival is a series of new beginnings.

From Bob Cotton: No true revival has ever fed the ego of man or encouraged superficiality.

From J. M. Barrie: One’s religion is what he is most interested in.

The Pilgrim Path---Revelation 2: 3 – 5a

“I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at the first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first…

“REMEMBER…REPENT”

It’s over three decades ago, a man in my church said, “I just don’t love my wife anymore.” He separated from her---and began to have the children for brief periods during the week. In the providence of God, I found out why his affection for his wife cooled so dramatically: He was involved with another woman. The man was a professional, stature in the community, and liked by many---but he left his wife. I’ve thought about that lately as I’ve pondered Revelation 2. The Lord Jesus Christ is not a puny Savior. Nor is He one among many masters. Jesus is not a label we wear---to cover our foolishness and folly. Jesus is the Savior of moral rebels. He saves us from sin---and does not leave us to continue in sin.

We have to remember where Christ used to be: First in our affections---and we must return to Him quickly---and acknowledge Him as Lord in every aspect of our lives. Please shake us Holy Spirit from our stupid allegiances to false gods---and false messiahs.

From J. C. Ryle: Nothing is so offensive to Christ as lukewarmness in religion.

From Martyn Lloyd-Jones: At the final bar of judgment, the gravest charge that will be made against us Christians will be that we were so unconcerned.

From Vance Havner: Affection is the answer to apathy.

From T. L. Cuyler: Repentance, to be of any avail, must work a change of heart and conduct.

From G. Campbell Morgan: Forgiveness is to be set loose from sins.

From A. W. Pink: Christ comes with a blessing in each hand; forgiveness in one, holiness in the other.

From Billy Zeoli: Our God has a big eraser.

The Pilgrim Path---II Thessalonians 5: 11 – 13 (5—12—26) Christian Standard Bible

For we hear that there are some among you who are idle. They are not busy but busy bodies. Now we command and exhort such people by the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and provide for themselves. But as for you, brothers and sisters, do not grow weary in doing good.

“DOING GOOD”

The spirit of the age tells us that work for Jesus Christ is worthless and unimportant. However, the Holy Spirit tells us not to grow weary in glorifying God and reaching souls for the Savior. Please animate us Sweet Spirit of Heaven---so we will die to self---and stay busy and zealous for the Living Christ!

From Jerry Bridges: Our good deeds are to be scattered upon all men, Christian and non-Christian.

From Oswald Chambers: Do good until it is an unconscious habit of life and you do not know you are doing it.

From Matthew Henry: When we take least notice of our good deeds ourselves, God takes most notice of them.

From George Whitefield: I am never better than when I am on the full stretch for God.

From Brother Andrew: It’s easier to cool down a fanatic than warm up a corpse.

The Pilgrim Path---Proverbs 4: 23, 24

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

Put away from you crooked speech and put devious talk far from you.

“KEEP YOUR HEART”

People will say---or shout to us, “Watch where you are going!” We were not careful of our movements---not as aware of our surroundings as we should have been. My---what a reminder: we are responsible for our heart, mind, and affections. We are to be shaped by Jesus Christ and his ways. Sanctification is a grace and a duty. Our vigilance has to do with not allowing the world, the flesh, or the devil---to direct our paths. Wake us up--- Holy Spirit---and enable us to watch out!

From Thomas Watson: The sins of the godly are worse than others because they bring a greater reproach upon religion.

From A. W. Tozer: There is no short cut to sanctity.

From Leighton Ford: There is no detour to holiness. Jesus came to the resurrection through the cross not around it.

From Charles Hodge: It is the tendency of righteousness to produce blessings, as it is the tendency of evil to produce misery.

The Pilgrim Path---Proverbs 22: 1

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.

“A GOOD NAME”

The God of the Ages knows us. He knows our name---and He knew us when none of our days on earth were established (Psalm 139). He wants our name knit to His Holy Son Jesus Christ. He wants us to walk His paths, love His truth, and show His compassion to the world. We must remind ourselves with regularity, The LORD defines a good name. It’s not the amount of silver or gold we possess. His attitude toward us---will outlast the world and all of its idols. Thanks be to God!

From J. C. Ryle: Nothing is so fickle and uncertain as popularity. It is here today and gone tomorrow. It is a sandy foundation and sure to fail those who build upon it.

From Vance Havner: Popularity has killed more prophets than persecution.

From Chrysostom: Nothing will so avail to divide the church as love of power.

From Richard Sibbes: If God has made us men, let us not make ourselves gods.

The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the LORD God says: Your heart is proud, and you have said, “I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.” Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god. Yes, you are wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you! By your wisdom and understanding you have acquired wealth for yourself. You have acquired gold and silver for your treasuries. By your great skill in trading, you have increased your wealth, but your heart has become proud because of your wealth.

“Therefore, this is what the LORD God says: Because you regard your heart as that of a god, I am about to bring strangers against you, ruthless men from the nations…”

The Pilgrim Path---II Corinthians 4: 8 – 10

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies…

“STRUCK DOWN BUT NOT DESTROYED”

On April 23, 2026, Mission to the World (MTW) posted an article, “Russia Continues Attacks on Churches and Civilians.” The shocking revelation, “Putin has killed as many as 80 pastors and priests and destroyed more than 700 churches. He targets evangelicals disproportionately…”

Oh---Precious Spirit of God---please aid the saints in Ukraine. Lift up their families, their churches---and their defenders--- across their land!

From John Calvin: Persecutions are in a way seals of adoption to the children of God.

From Jonathan Edwards: Never expect to find this world anything better than a wilderness.

From Billy Graham: It is unnatural for Christianity to be popular.

From Samuel Rutherford: If you were not strangers here the hounds of the world would not bark at you.

The Pilgrim Path---Ephesians 3: 18, 19

…may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

“STRENGTH TO COMPREHEND”

To read the Bible is the beginning. To have the Holy Spirit move upon us in such a way that we apply the truth---feel its power---savor its richness---this is life from the Living Christ. Ole John Bunyan prompts us to grasp that the Lord Jesus is higher than any pinnacles on earth. Jesus is the image of the invisible God---higher than any mountains of creation---as the creator himself. Jesus’ love and care---far deeper than our lowest lows---means he understands--- and can raise us up---past our woes and worries!

Please help us Spirit of grace and supplication---to saturate ourselves in the truth of the Word…

From Thomas Goodwin: According to the Scriptures, knowledge includes the affections. Real knowledge brings down spiritual things into the heart.

From Vincent Alsop: The love of Christ was a conquering, triumphant love. It bore down whatever stood in its way. It grappled with the displeasure of God, with the malice of devils, the fury of unreasonable men, and with the unkindness of his friends. It broke through all discouragements and trampled upon all oppositions. The waters could not quench it, and the floods could not drown it. So much we know, and we blush that our love to Christ is so easily quenched, discouraged, and disheartened. Though we cannot attain the fullness of the fountain of his love, we may receive a fullness of the vessel from the fountain. Let us pray that we may know more of the love of Christ and be filled with the fullness of Christ.

The Pilgrim Path---Psalm 103: 11, 12

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

“AS FAR AS THE EAST IS FROM THE WEST”

From Samuel Ward: Christ’s blood is all-sufficient to cover, abolish, and wholly take away our sins in such a way that He neither sees, will see, nor can see them as sins and debts against us.

From Stephen Charnock: When sin is pardoned, it is never charged again; the guilt of it can no more return than the east becomes west or west become east.
