The Pilgrim Path (1—13—23)

The Pilgrim Path---Matthew 26: 71 – 75 (1—13—23)

And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

“…AND WEPT BITTERLY”

The LORD Jesus said that the disciples would deny him---when great trial and trouble arose. Peter was indignant---he said he would never do such a thing. Peter did deny Jesus---three times. Yet, Jesus never denied Peter (or us). Jesus never said after our arrogant betrayals, our dumb acts of cowardice---that we should be cast off. Jesus is startling in love and mercy. Jesus is shocking--- in demonstrations of sympathy and compassion. Jesus would even have Peter come back and serve. The Son of God---is incredible in HIS ministry of Gospel glory toward broken and humble people.

So many souls around us are callous---so hard like stone. How marvelous when we “see” just the start of contrition before the LORD. Peter had wandered off---in order to return, he had to shed some necessary tears. My---my, he who is forgiven much---loves much (sound familiar?).

From Frank Thielman: Peter and the other disciples sought refuge in Jesus’ offer of restored fellowship (Matt. 28: 7, 10) and in his renewed call to service in the kingdom (28: 16—20).

From John Duncan: Has he drawn you from yourself? That requires the most drawing force of any?
