The Pilgrim Path (1—25—23)

The Pilgrim Path---First Kings 16: 25, 26 (1—25—23)

Omri did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and did more evil than all who were before him. For he walked in all the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in the sins that he made Israel to sin, provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger by their idols.

“AND DID MORE…”

The Bible does talk about records, numbers, and specific individuals. Holy Scripture refers to the names of the stars---the number of hairs upon our head---an awareness of our words---before they are formed on the back of our tongue. Here in First Kings 16, is a telling notation regarding King Omri, he did more evil than all who were before him. Hmmm---The LORD God Almighty is tabulating transgressions---iniquities---sins in thought, word, and deed. The motives and intent of the human heart are mined and measured without fail. My---we understand why Jonathan Edwards used to say, “My sins are mountain height in consideration and accumulation.” The Glory of the Gospel---is for an individual--- to be “seen” in Jesus Christ. His righteousness becoming ours---by grace through faith! Yet, we still “repent of particular sins particularly.” No regenerate soul is to act as though sin is minor---or does not matter…

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1: 8, 9

From John Duncan: Repentance is both a grace and a duty.

From Jack Miller: God-given prayer and praise have as their essence a waiting on God, a willingness to be wrought upon by the hammer and the fire of the Almighty, until the chains of self-centered desires fall away from the personality, and the love of Christ becomes the deepest hunger of the inner life.
