The Pilgrim Path---Numbers 11: 1 – 3

And the people complained in the hearing of the LORD about their misfortunes, and when the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the LORD burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down. So the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burned among them.

“AND THE PEOPLE COMPLAINED…”

The Lord’s People do complain. Circumstances become harsh and we become harsh. On occasion, we even blame the Savior for the hard knocks we are enduring on the path of sanctification. We believe we know better than the LORD. Moses’ congregation had been delivered. They were being kept. They could see His Presence above the Tabernacle in a sacred cloud. All these mercies of belonging were lost to present discomforts of dissatisfaction. The LORD was not enough. We must be careful. At times we behave as if Jesus Christ is not treasure enough. We must ask the Holy Spirit to help us do the math every day. We must calculate the lasting benefits The God-Man Jesus conveys (He supports us, and we are unaware). Thank You LORD!

From Charles Haddon Spurgeon: Great hearts can only be made by great troubles. The spade of trouble digs the reservoir of comfort deeper and makes more room for consolation. God comes into our heart---He finds it full---He begins to break our comforts and to make it empty; then there is more room for grace.

From John Duncan: Sinner, take Christ, you will get everything.
