The Pilgrim Path (11-15-2020)

The Pilgrim Path---Proverbs 13: 20

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

Some wise souls to offer some wisdom for the path:

“Effective prayer is the fruit of a relationship with God, not a technique for acquiring blessings.” D. A. Carson

“Christianity is not engrossed by this transitory world but measures all things by the thought of eternity.” John G. Machen

“Spiritual growth depends on two things: first a willingness to live according to the Word of God; second, a willingness to take whatever consequences emerge as a result.” Sinclair Ferguson

“It is through pride that the devil became the devil…it is the complete anti-GOD state of mind.” C. S. Lewis

“It is the gladness of the heart of Christ, the joy of his soul, to take poor sinners into this relation with himself. He rejoiced in the thoughts of it from eternity, Proverbs 8: 31; and always expresseth the greatest willingness to undergo the hard task required thereunto, Psalm 40: 7, 8; Hebrews 10: 7; yea, he was pained as a woman in travail, until he had accomplished it, Luke 12: 50. Because he loved his church, he gave himself for it, Ephesians 5: 25, despising the shame, and enduring the cross, Hebrews 12: 2, that he might enjoy his bride---that he might be for her, and SHE FOR HIM, AND NOT FOR ANOTHER, Hosea 3: 3.” John Owen

“Reading Scripture is like collecting pollen. Meditating on it is like making honey.” Bruce Waltke

“Do what we will to purify a church, we shall never succeed in obtaining a perfectly pure communion. Tares will be found among wheat. Hypocrites and deceivers will creep in. And worst of all, if we are extreme in our efforts to obtain purity, we do more harm than good. We run the risk of encouraging many a Judas Iscariot and breaking many a bruised reed. In our zeal to ‘gather up the tares,’ we are in danger of ‘rooting up the wheat with them.’ Such zeal is not according to knowledge and has often done much harm. Those who care not what happens to the wheat, provided they can root up the tares, show little of the mind of Christ. And after all there is deep truth in the charitable saying of Augustine, ‘Those who are tares today, may be wheat tomorrow.’” Bishop J. C. Ryle

“We cannot ‘know’ God in a way that explains everything about him. The only way that we can approach God is through worship: holy, holy, holy.” Eugene Peterson

“The essence of faith is being satisfied with ALL that God is for us in Jesus.” John Piper

“I think the greatest weakness in the church today is that almost no one believes that GOD invests His power in the Bible.” R. C. Sproul

“The One who blesses the whole universe became accursed! He who is perfect righteousness was reckoned among transgressors! Life Itself came to us in the guise of death! These things are all true because His human body that tasted death was the very body of Him who is God’s own Son by nature.” St. Cyril of Alexandria

“When you think you can divide half between God and the world, and secure both the fleshly interest of pleasure and prosperity, and your salvation, you are seeking to serve God and mammon (money & things).” Richard Baxter

“As sure as he is God, he will perform his promises. You may as well say there is no God as doubt his performance.” David Clarkson

“All that we discover in God will teach us to place the arms of our trust in him alone. Our God is a safe place on which to lean.” Thomas Lye

“The will of God is either a burden that we carry or a power that carries us.” Corrie ten Boom

“The more men know and the less they do, the more they dishonor God. O let us do the works of true Christians and approve ourselves to God and man! Do not be content with easier and cheaper work. Every morning in the planning of your affairs, acknowledge your own disability and commend yourself to the work of His grace in desire and action. Entreat Him for help that Christ may live through you.” Samuel Ward

“Let is labor to be convinced of the excellence of spiritual things…” Richard Sibbes

“I think it is a sweet thing, that Christ saith of my cross, Half mine, and that he divideth these sufferings with me and taketh the largest share to himself; nay, that I, and my whole cross, are wholly Christ’s.” Samuel Rutherford

“All along, let us remember we are not asked to understand, but simply to obey.” Amy Carmichael

“Wherever pride is, there the devil is riding in his first fiery chariot.” William Law

“Humility is one of the great marks of a crucified man.” Andrew Murray

“The LORD’S mercy often rides to the door of our hearts on the black horse of affliction.” Charles Haddon Spurgeon

“It is not really a small thing when in small things we resist self.” Thomas A Kempis

HYMN

Jesus loves me, loves me still,

Though I’m very weak and ill;

From his shinning throne on high,

Comes to watch me where I lie.

Yes, Jesus loves Me!

Yes, Jesus loves Me!

Yes, Jesus loves Me!

The Bible tells Me so.

Anna B. Warner, 1859
