The Pilgrim Path (3—1—23)

The Pilgrim Path---Second Chronicles 18: 4 – 8 (3—1—23)

Then Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Inquire first for the word of the LORD.” Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said to them, “Shall we go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?” And they said, “Go up, for God will give it into the hand of the king.” But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there not here another prophet of the LORD of whom we may inquire?” And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the LORD, Micaiah the son of Imlah; but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil.” And Jehoshaphat said, “Let not the king say so.” Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said, “Bring quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah.”

“IS THERE NOT HERE ANOTHER PROPHET…”

On the face of it---400 prophets would appear a reliable group. Yet, if not one speaks for the LORD---you are in trouble! Jehoshaphat asks, “Isn’t there one prophet of God around here?” The crafty King Ahab reveals his heart by declaring: “Sure---but I hate the guy. All he ever tells me is bad stuff---never anything good.” Well, when you read the Historical Books of the Old Testament, there is a reason Ahab gets this treatment: Ahab followed false gods / Ahab lived for false hopes---leading to a tragic end (and--- an awful eternity).

We must listen and obey the Word of God--- that King Jesus providentially places before us. It is not there by accident or mistake. It is Life and Peace…

From Jack Miller: Only when you know you are a sinner, is there hope that you will find grace. If you don’t know you have a debt, you can’t be happy when it is paid.

From Samuel Rutherford: Let our Lord’s sweet hand square us and hammer us, and strike off the knots of pride, self-love and world-worship, and infidelity, that he may make us stones and pillars in his Father’s house (Rev. 3: 12).
