The Pilgrim Path---Job 36: 26 – 28

Behold, God, is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable.

For he draws up the drops of water; they distill his mist in rain, which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly.

“…THE DROPS OF WATER”

The Bible is meticulous about numbers. In Genesis we find out that God names the stars. The psalmist gives us the idea that God has the number of the grains of sand within his grasp. The LORD Jesus tells us the number of “hairs” upon heads---never escape the great God. All these matters are just too much for our finite mind to comprehend. They command our awe and worship. God is God---and there is no other. Here in Job chapter 36---Elihu reminds us that the LORD God Almighty draws up the “drops” of rain in his bucket. Try that on for size. Individual drops of rain---that eventually distill into mist. All these “images” are meant to represent to us a being---Who is chief---and supreme. He is in charge. He is never behind---or trying to catch up. I am supposed to trust HIM. Well, I have trouble with that. I worry and--- tend to look too far. You know, instead of living one day at a time---taking on more than I was designed--- to take on. Nothing wrong with being prudent---but trying to live next week---or next month “today”---is wrong. There is powerful wisdom in the “model prayer”---Give us this day---our daily bread. We need to live today---and work today---and “leave” the burdens of tomorrow with the King. HE is far better at counting---and providing---than we ever will be. Help me (us) LORD!

From Thomas Lye: We can ask great things and can imagine greater. God’s power far exceeds all. If we open our mouth ever so wide he can more than fill it (Psalm 86: 10).

From Samuel Ward: Among all the gifts of God there is nothing more useful than faith. It is profitable for this life and the life to come.

From St. Cyril of Jerusalem: I praise and glorify Him who created us; for it’s a divine command that says, “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!” (Psalm 150: 6). And I’m trying now to glorify the Lord, not to define what He is.

From H. J. Bevis: God regulates the ripples on the sea of human life, caused by trivial circumstances, as well as the lifting up of the floods, when the angry waves threaten us with shipwreck. God is great, and He is so great that He is gentle; there are no hands so strong, and none so tender. God does great things, but He does them silently. The greatest forces operate without bustle and noise. Gentleness is the perfection of strength…

From Richard Baxter: Get better acquainted with Christ and his promises, and you will find enough in him to pacify the soul and give you confidence and holy boldness in your access to God (Heb. 4: 14; Rom. 8: 15).
